Adolescent Vaccination
WHO defines adolescence age between 10 to 19 years. In India, there are 243 million adolescents who constitute 21 per cent of the total population and the population cohort from 10 – 24 years constitutes nearly 30 % of total population. The adolescent vaccination protects most of the world’s adolescents from a number of infectious diseases. In India, there is a significant burden of communicable diseases every year that could have been prevented by vaccination.
Why Adolescents need Vaccination?
- Waning immunity of few childhood vaccines and missing of earlier dose(s) or booster dose (diphtheria, pertussis and tetanus).
- The adolescent age is the period for experimentation, exploration and expedition and hence they are more prone to high risk behaviours such as sexual encounters, substance abuse and unhygienic food consumption. All such factors make them potential candidates for infectious diseases such as hepatitis A, B and C and human papilloma virus infection.
- Improved vaccination coverage of children in National Immunization Program and sanitation has caused a shift in the age incidence and disease patterns of vaccine preventable diseases (such as diphtheria, pertussis, hepatitis A) resulting in an upward shift (epidemiological shift) of these diseases.
- Lack of natural boosting, increased severity (varicella), prevention of disease in adulthood (HPV, hepatitis B) is required.
- As a part of Campaign for elimination of the disease such as measles and reduction in congenital rubella syndrome (CRS) which is a part of measles and rubella campaign (MR campaign) which includes children up to 15 years of age.
